Description: Original NASA color offset photography / photo print from 1969 by Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin during the Apollo-11 lunar mission that put the first humans on the Moon. Aldrin is seen in this famous photo in the lunar landscape, while photographer Neil Armstrong is reflected in Aldrins's visor.
The Apollo program was started by President John F. Kennedy, who in 1961 declared that Americans would be on the Moon before the decade was over. It succeeded when Neil Armstrong stepped on the surface of the Moon in July 1969 and said the famous words: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
