When glasses get ill

Glass ilness can be compared to rust. The illness results in discoloration, and it washes out the material. In some cases you can feel the illness with a fingernail, and it gives the glass a foggy and unclear appearance. Usually the illness takes the form of white spots or ribbons, and there are several possible reasons for its materialization. If your dishwasher is lacking rinse aid and salt, or if you wash your glasses in really hot water, the illness is more likely to infect them. Sometimes the glasses can get sick, just because you place them upside down in your china cabinet.

If you want to minimize the risk of your glasses cathing the illness, wash them by hand. If you’re addicted to the dishwasher, make sure to open the machine, as soon as it’s completed the rinse cycle.
Take the glasses out immediately after and wipe them over with a dry cloth.

You shouldn’t throw out a sick looking glass, until you’ve made sure, that it’s infected with glass illness. It’s easy to confuse with stains from soap and calcium. Try wiping the glass with a cloth soaked in vinegar. If the surface is clear once the glass has dried, the vinegar has done its job. If the surface is still foggy, then you know for sure, that the glass has the illness.

If you use this little trick, then the good news is, that you won’t miss it, if your glasses have the illness. The bad news is, that you can’t cure the disease. Like human beings glasses are fragile creatures, and if you don’t take care of them, they’ll get sick and sad looking.
