Biscuit is originally porcelain or faience burned only one time and unglazed, later a hard burned version is burned twice. At Royal Copenhagen copies of Bertil Thorvalsen’s sculptures were known back to 1824, but a serial production was not seen until 1838 reaching a peak at the world fair in London 1851 and in Paris 1855 and actually the production kept on until 1920. Since the works were copies after originals of Thorvaldsen (often made by young students at the Royal Academy studying under H.W.Bissen) they were marked “Eneret”, which means copyright. Your piece is marked H for the artist J.A. Hansen who was working at Royal Copenhagen from 1878-1876 and again 1884-1888.
